5 Common Reason Air Conditioners Run Constantly

5 Common Reason Air Conditioners Run ConstantlyUnder normal conditions, air conditioners work in cycles, constantly switching on and off to adjust to a room’s temperature. Sometimes ACs may run for longer periods of time, especially if its hotter outside than usual. However, if your AC is running non-stop this could signal that there’s a problem. Below are some of the most common issues that keep air conditioners running constantly.

1. The evaporator coil is clogged

If you just unpacked and plugged your HVAC without giving it a proper spring cleaning, chances are that the evaporator coil is covered with dirt and debris. In normal circumstances, refrigerant would run through the evaporator coils and absorb the heat from the air in your home. However, if the coils are covered with dirt it makes it so much harder for them to do their job.

2. The air filter is blocked

Air is the bread and butter of an AC, so you can imagine that an air conditioner with a blocked air path will have a hard time cooling a room. If you can’t remember when was the last time you changed your air filter you might’ve already found the solution to your problem. Changing the clogged air filter for a new one will help the air conditioner to remove humidity and keep the air cool. Plus, it’s also really easy to do on your own, so you won’t have to spend any time or money taking it to the repair shop.

3. Your air conditioner is too small

No matter how hard it works, if an AC is too small for your home it won’t be able to keep it cool. You probably didn’t notice this when you bought your unit, but as time went on and your AC started to show signs of wear and tear it became increasingly impossible for it to keep up. There are two solutions to this problem: you could either buy a bigger air conditioner or find a way to make your room smaller. If you go for the latter, try thinking of the place where you spend the most time and if it’s too open use curtains, plastic sheets, or anything else to divide the area.

4. Your thermostat is broken

The thermostat is responsible for checking the room temperature, meaning that an AC with a broken thermostat has no way to know when to turn off and on. You can check if your thermostat is broken with the help of a thermometer, but even without a thermometer, it’s easy to tell because your AC will keep working even though your room is already freezing.

5. Your AC is old and over the hill

This might be the hardest one to accept because there’s no way to solve it other than buying a new one. A good AC which has received annual maintenance can last up to 15 years, although most ACs have a lifespan of 10 years. Upgrading to a newer model might sound like the most expensive option at first, but it’s way cheaper than keeping an old air conditioner that needs constant repairs to keep working.

Air conditioners are expensive pieces of hardware. If you still can’t find the issue with your AC, it’s time to call the experts. Never underestimate the seriousness of this problem. Having an AC running all the time during the summer might seem like a blessing at first, but then the electricity bills come in and your AC starts breaking down. Get your AC fixed, keep it well-maintained, and you’ll have a cool house awaiting you when you get off from work for many years to come
