3 Household Areas You Should Declutter Today

3 Household Areas You Should Declutter TodayWhether you are looking to downsize or just want to clean up the clutter, getting rid of all the accumulated stuff in your house can be a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be. There are some simple steps you can take first to get a good jump on cleaning out your home. Here are a few areas of your home you can declutter by getting rid of what you don’t need.

A lot of the accumulated clutter comes from just saving things that you think you may want someday or seemed like a good purchase at the time. But a lot of this is stuff that you haven’t touched since you threw it in a drawer, cabinet or closet. For many people, it’s the same things. Take a look at these categories and decide what you really need.

  • Kitchen Junk. How many coffee mugs can you possibly use? This is one of those items that seem to get collected over the years and just sit in a cabinet. You probably use the same coffee mug every day, so get rid of the rest. The same is true for old food containers and party supplies. Save what you actually use and chuck the rest. Finally, toss out all of that plastic silverware, napkins and condiment packets you keep bringing home from restaurants. You didn’t need them then, and you don’t need them now.
  • Bathroom Junk. Go through and toss old medication. Whether it’s prescription or OTC drugs, it’s not only an easy way to clear up space; it’s safer and healthier to do so. Also, how about all those travel size toiletries you keep accumulating on trips? Do you really think you are going to use that half-squeezed tiny tube of toothpaste? Throw all that in the trash. And while you’re at it, discard old makeup and sunblock.
  • Closet Junk. The closet is the final resting place of a lot of your junk. Most things in there cost a bit of money, so you hate to get rid of them. But you’re never going to find the mate to those mismatched socks, so toss them. Old, worn-out shoes that you’ve replaced need to go. The rule for clothing is, if you haven’t worn it in a year, get rid of it. If you don’t feel comfortable with that, make it two years, but get rid of the things that you are honestly never going to wear again. Go through your old towels and bedding. You likely rotate through two or three sets of each, so any that aren’t in that rotation, donate to charity.

At some point, decluttering is going to come down to some tough choices. But you can make a lot of really easy decisions and clean up a great deal of junk that has no value or meaning. Take a walk through your house with a trash bag and dump all the junk you don’t need.
