Transferring a Title On A Motor Vehicle In Florida In A Casual Sale
If you’re new to Florida, you should know that transferring a title on a motor vehicle in the Sunshine State is a little different than in some other states. If you want to sell your car to another individual, you have a couple of extra things to to. First off, you have to make sure that there is no lien on it anymore. An individual can’t transfer a title to another individual without a clear title. So, you will want to make sure that you have on hand a lien satisfaction document. Selling a car to another individual is referred to as a casual sale. You can’t see a car in a casual sale in Florida with a lien on the title.
Don’t Forget The Notice of Sale
Generally, sellers like to have a bill of sale made up for their own protection. You can find a bill of sale template online. Here’s the important thing you have to do if you are transferring a title in Florida. As of ten years ago, Florida law requires that you submit a Notice of Sale to the DHSMV. E-Titles & Casual Sales
If you’re selling your car to another person, you won’t be able to use the normal Florida e-title. Individuals can’t transfer titles to each other using a Florida e-title. You’ll have to get a hard copy. Thankfully, that’s cheap and easy to do. You can just order a hard copy of the title from the state online at www.flhsmv.gov. It will cost you only a $2.50 service fee for printing and mailing. If you’d rather go somewhere in person, because you don’t want to wait, you can usually just go to your local Tax Collector office. The cost is a $10 expedited service fee. Here’s a list of Tax Collector offices in case you don’t know where your local tax collector office is.
