How To Get Out Of A Bad Mood
We’ve all been there – maybe you aren’t sleeping enough, have a horrifying assignment at work, trouble with your boss, trouble in your marriage, or difficulty with a child. Maybe you’re badly in need of a vacation but don’t have the time or money to take one. Maybe you just woke up in an incredibly bad mood this morning! Whatever the reason, your mood is an important factor in your life for lots of reasons – it is a big determinant in your mental health, the personal relationship you have with others, and the general vibe you give off in your professional and family relationships. The good news is – there are things you can do to help relieve a bad mood. What will not work is continuing to say to yourself “I’m in such a bad mood.” Instead, try some of these tried and true bad mood-busters.
How To Get Out Of A Bad Mood
- Get some moderate physical exercise if possible
- Journal about what you think may be bothering you
- Pray or meditate
- Try a brief change in scenery – a car ride perhaps, or a visit to a neighbor
- Take a nap
It’s no secret that physical exercise actually helps change the chemistry of your brain by releasing endorphins, or “feel good hormones.” These can instantly erase a bad mood and make you feel more hopeful, optimistic, grateful and many other positive emotions. So get out your bike and head out for a 30 minute bike ride or walk if you can.
If you have some stressors going on, think about what they are, and how you can manage them. It helps to write down specific feelings in a journal, what is causing them, and what you can possibly to do to change them. For example, if you are having a tough time with your boss, write down what may be causing the conflict and how it’s making you feel. Then write possible solutions – Speaking to your boss, speaking to HR, applying to a different department, transferring to a different department. Just journaling your feelings and potential actions will help.
If you are a spiritual person, try prayer. You can pray right where you are, or you can go to your place of worship and perhaps pray with a member of clergy. Or you can try meditation – there are some great guided meditation videos on YouTube. Definitely worth a try.
If it’s bad weather and you can’t exercise, try going for a ride – even to a neighbor’s house or to get a coffee on the other side of town. The change of scenery will stir up your senses, cause you to break from your thought pattern, and may bring some new life into your mind and heart.
Sometimes a nap can truly help – or a restful night’s sleep if it’s time for bed. Let go of the day’s worries and think about relaxing thoughts or fun past experiences you’ve had. Prepare your headspace for a better day tomorrow.
