Five No-Fail Steps To Closet Organization
It’s that time of year – the time of the purge! If you haven’t gone through your closet lately to remove clothing that is no longer worn, it’s time. When summer turns to fall, even if you live in an area that doesn’t experience much seasonal change, it’s a good time to renew your wardrobe and lift your spirits. This will ultimately save you time and money. If, by chance, you are thinking of selling your home or moving, an organized closet is very attractive to buyers. Don’t think you can just shove everything into a closet – this is one area you have to bite the bullet! They want to see what available organizational space is in the home. If you have maximized yours, it seems like a great deal. If you have a messy, stuffed, overflowing closet, they leave your house with a less than great impression.
Five-No Fail Steps To Closet Organization
- Get rid of what you don’t wear or use
- Inspect all clothing for tears and stains (don’t forget shoes!)
- Invest in good hangers
- Use a system that makes Sense to You
- Keep accessories on separate shelving or hooks
If ever there is a time to be ruthless, this is it. Yes, it’s true you may lose twenty pounds. However, if you do, it’s probably time to reward yourself with some brand new jeans and dresses, instead of the out of style ones that have not been touched in the past ten years. There may be some sentimental pieces you can’t part with and that’s okay, but make sure you limit those. Everything in your closet and drawers should be actively worn and used by you on a regular basis – otherwise it takes up space for no reason, and leaves no room for new things. You can donate your unneeded clothes to a woman’s shelter, a church, a homeless shelter, a local high school – check around and see what you feel is appropriate. It feels good to give!
Inspect your clothing (especially work clothes) for tears, snags, stains, etc. Make appropriate repairs if you are able. Nothing gives a more unpolished appearance than a missing button! If you can sew, take the project on yourself. If not, take the articles to a good seamstress. It’s probably time to get some things dry-cleaned as well! Make sure your clothes are ready-to-wear and you will be much more likely to wear them, instead of standing in frustration in font of your closet in the morning. Don’t forget your shoes – make sure they are in good repair. Old, torn, scuffed shoes (unless they are for gardening) need to go. If you never wear a pair of shoes because they hurt your feet, you never will. Donate them!
Invest in good hangers – the velvet kind are great because they grab your clothes and keep them from slipping off. You can also buy them in different colors – blue for pants, green for shirts, pink for skirts – just another way to stay organized and see everything at a glance. No more searching through your closet for precious minutes in the morning!
People have systems for organization – some put all skirts together, all pants together, etc. Some hang clothes up by outfits. Some separate clothes by casual, dress, yoga, etc. Whatever you do, make sure it works for you. If you’re required to wear black pants everyday, probably anything works. If you rarely wear dresses, place those at the back of your closet. If you wear jeans everyday, have them front and center.
We all love scarves and belts to complete our look, but it’s so frustrating to search for them when they are needed and not find them! Use specific shelving or hooks for accessories so that you can easily grab and return them when you’re done. This way, your closet is working for you instead of against you.
