The Two-Headed Gator of Seminole Heights
Gators are nothing new in Florida, but a two-headed alligator sculpture in Tampa’s Seminole Heights neighborhood is one for the books. Old Tampa folklore tells the story of a rabbit teasing a two-headed alligator in the Hillsborough River; naturally, the alligator (well, one of its heads, anyway) devoured the bunny. That legendary alligator has captured the imaginations of Tampa Bay residents for decades, and a 6-foot-tall sculpture of it now graces the front lawn of Southern Brewing and Winemaking.
Cuba’s Parque Amigos de Jose Marti
The country of Cuba owns a small slice of property in Tampa – the Parque Amigos de Jose Marti (in English, that’s the Friends of Jose Marti Park). The land was donated to Cuba in 1956, just three years before that country’s communist revolution; the transaction was certified by the American consulate in Havana. The park itself contains soil from each of Cuba’s provinces, as well as memorial statues of two national heroes: Jose Julian Marti Perez and Jose Antonio de la Caridad Maceo y Grajales. Though the park is open to the public, you can only visit it between Monday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. – the gates are locked outside those hours.
Dysfunctional Grace Art Co.
The Dysfunctional Grace Art Co. in Tampa his pact with oddities, including taxidermy and other strange finds out of world history. Many of the items you find inside the shop are for sale, though some are for display only. From tiny dolls in coffins to weirdly shaped coral formations, if it’s strange, you’ll find it here.
